Rachel went to the caféâs kitchen sink, ran warm water, pumped some liquid soap into her hands, and began rubbing. The milky liquid ran down the drain, watching it made her wish she could wash away her troubles just as easily, wash away her memories just as thoroughly.
The phone behind the cash register began to ring, a decided annoyance. At least sheâd quit jumping every time it rang. She no longer expected the person calling to be Lynx.
After drying her hands on a towel, she reached for the phone. "Roundup-Café, Rachel speaking."
"Hi, Rachel, itâs Dan. Is my better half there?"
Rachel gripped the receiver for a moment. She hadn't realized how similar Danâs voice was to Lynxâs. "Ah, sure. Hold on for a second, okay?"
Placing the receiver on the counter, Rachel walked across the dining room and tapped her friend on the shoulder.
"I'll take care of this table. Danâs on the phone."
"Thanks, honey!" Charlene shoved the order pad and pencil in Rachel's hands.
Giving Clayton Michaels a smile, Rachel wrote down his dinner order.
After these last two weeks, sheâd come to believe sheâd get over Lynx, believing that, even if he showed up on her doorstep the next day, she'd be able to send him away. But when Charlene pulled her aside, ten minutes later, Rachel knew it wasn't true.
"Dan says Lynx misses you."
"Really?" she asked, disbelieving but hopeful. "Then why hasn't he called me?"
"Danâs trying to find that out.â
"Oh, for heaven's sake, Charlene! Dan didn't really ask, did he?"
"Well, of course he did, honey. He's worried about Lynx--â
"Was Lynx hurt?â
"No. Calm down. It's nothing like that. Dan says Lynx isnât taking care of himself. He's pushing himself way too hard."
"Charlene, there could be any number of reasons why Lynx isnât acting the same. Maybe he's tired of being on the road."
Charlene glanced at Rachel, her blue eyes serious. "Could be, except for--"
"For what?" Rachel asked, her heart thundering.
"He's watching movies."
Rachel blinked and gave her friend a look that clearly cast doubts on Charleneâs sanity. "So?"
"Theyâre bunking together at Wolfâs Point because the fairgrounds are--"
"Charlene!" Rachel warned, at the end of her patience.
"From what Dan says, Lynx never rents movies. He reads or hangs out at the gym when he and Dan are staying in town. Apparently, Lynx is staying up late watching rented DVDs. Dan hates it. He says that he has to watch Casablanca or Romancing the Stone one more time, he's going to puke."
Rachel couldn't keep the bubble of laughter inside.
Lynx Maddox was six feet, two inches of muscular, square-jawed, Stetson-wearing cowboy. She couldnât picture him watching a love story. Unknowingly, she gave a soft sigh. If only what Dan said was true. However, she knew Lynx wouldnât waste his time pining for a woman. "Charlene, Danâs only teasing."
"I don't know." her voice filled with doubt. "He sounded serious to me. What if Danâs telling the truth?"
"Let's just forget it, okay?"
âMaybe Lynx is missing you. Maybe you should go and call him." Charlene glanced at the pay phone on the far wall.
